Nature and landscape

The Sierra de Chiva is designated as a municipal natural area and is the largest area of this kind in the Comunitat Valenciana. Its landscape is characterised by a network of ravines and mountain ridges and features distinctive natural landmarks.

History and culture

The Castillo de Chiva is a medieval fortress on a hill; from its panoramic viewpoint, it is even possible to see the sea. The final section to the castle must be covered on foot, even though access is initially possible on foot or by car. Next to the castle stands the Santuario de la Virgen del Castillo, which dates from the 19th century.

The Barrio de Bechinos has a street layout influenced by Arab design. The Torreta de Chiva was probably built in the 11th or 12th century for defensive purposes. The Torre de Telegrafía Óptica de Chiva belonged to the Madrid–València optical telegraph line, whose installation began in 1848.

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista houses José Vergara’s largest collection of paintings and has a Baroque retable façade whose design was inspired by Il Gesù in Rome. The Centro de Interpretación del Torico presents a festival that was originally atavistic and may have pre-Christian origins, and which was recently recognised as being of regional tourist interest. Visits to the centre are organised by appointment, for groups of up to 10 people and in compliance with the applicable regulations. The Fiesta del Torico de la Cuerda is celebrated in Chiva from 15 to 25 August 2026; the main traditional days are 17, 18 and 19 August.

Getting around Chiva

The Ruta de la Lana branch of the Way of Saint James crosses agricultural areas of Chiva, leads into the town centre and crosses the Puente Viejo along the way. Chiva has numerous wineries producing a wide variety of wines as well as the well-known mistela. The Kartódromo Lucas Guerrero is a racing circuit specifically designed for karting, with a technically demanding section of bends.
