Nature

El Surar is a municipal natural area in the municipalities of Llutxent and Pinet and is home to the southernmost cork oak forest in the Comunitat Valenciana. El Surar is classified as a Site of Community Importance; it also contains two flora micro-reserves, as well as protected animal species and endemic flora. A pond in El Surar forms a habitat where various amphibian species can be found.

Routes

The PR-CV 434 begins at Plaça Major in Llutxent and leaves the town via the GR-236. One section of this route either leads back to the town or continues to El Surar. Along the way, the PR-CV 434 passes the dry-stone hut Barraca de pedra seca de Camilo el Xurro.

The Route of the Monasteries also includes the Monasterio del Corpus Christi in Llutxent. Its hiking section along the GR-236 is more than 90 kilometres long, begins at Gandia railway station, ends at Alzira railway station and is connected to public transport. The different route lengths and starting points provide a clear comparison for trip planning between local trails and a long regional route.

Culture and History

In the historic centre of Llutxent stands the Castillo Palacio Señorial, a historic building constructed in the 14th century and an example of Valencian Gothic architecture. The building has a rectangular floor plan with four corner towers arranged around a central courtyard.

The Monasterio del Corpus Christi has an 18th-century square cloister with five round arches on pilasters. Its construction began in 1422. Around 1475, the monastery became a university where art and theology were taught to members of religious orders. To visit the interior, an appointment must be arranged by telephone.

The parish church Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora was built in 1868 according to a Latin-cross floor plan. It preserves a 16th-century processional cross and an icon of the Holy Face. The bell tower was added in 1925 and is approximately 30 metres high.

The Ermita de la Consolación was built in the 18th century; its furnishings tell the story of the miracle of the Corporales.

Festivals

The Moros y Cristianos celebration includes the Entrada and the Embajadas and has the status of a festival of local tourist interest. The Moros y Cristianos festival tradition in Llutxent is associated with the Miracle dels Corporals and the place known as Barranquet de la Sangre.
