Discover Ayora: Culture, Rock Art and Nature

The Castillo de Ayora rises above Ayora on a rocky hill, overlooking the town. Designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural, it is protected as a historic monument. Its history dates back to Arab origins; in the 17th century, it was transformed into a fortified palace.

Culture

Ayora’s historical character is also reflected in the Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora. Its first construction phase lasted from 1508 to 1577, while the second began in 1595 and was completed in 1628. Inside, the church preserves panels by Yáñez de Almedina, including oil paintings by Vicente López, as well as a Gothic altarpiece with painted panels from the 16th-century Valencian School, associated with the circle of Master Cabanillas.

Another site of cultural and historical interest is the Abrigo de Tortosilla. It contains the first examples of prehistoric rock art discovered in the Comunitat Valenciana. The privately owned Abrigo de Tortosilla can be visited by prior reservation; its Levantine rock paintings were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.

Trails

The Ruta del Hilo Rojo is an urban cultural trail through Ayora that leads to monuments, anecdotes and traditions associated with the town. The route’s sights feature QR codes with audio guides in Valencian, English and Spanish. The Ruta del Hilo Rojo is a 3.1-kilometre circular route of low difficulty.

The Ruta del Agua complements this cultural offering with an easy 6.2-kilometre circular hike. It combines paved roads with signposted trails and passes through an area where local flora and fauna can be observed. Different route lengths and trail types provide clear points of comparison for planning your day. For day planning, the two circular routes can be clearly distinguished by length, trail type and thematic character, without representing the same kind of excursion.

Nature

For mountain biking, the La Hunde BTT route is a 22.89-kilometre circular route with a moderate technical difficulty level. It runs through a natural setting with diverse native flora and fauna. The Montemayor BTT route is suitable for mountain terrain and birdwatching.

Local Highlights

At the beginning of October, Ayora hosts El Primer Corte de la Miel, an event dedicated to beekeeping, gastronomy, tourism and culture. At El Primer Corte de la Miel, visitors can taste honey after a demonstration of honey extraction from exhibition hives.
