Culture and History

The Castillo de Alcalá, also known as Castillo de la Puebla de Mula, is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. The present-day fortress was built in the mid-12th century using rammed earth. The entrance to Castillo de Alcalá is possibly the oldest example of an angled gate in the Región de Murcia. In the 16th century, the watchtower was converted into an ermita dedicated to María Magdalena. The building therefore brings together several historical layers: the fortress, watchtower and religious site belong to the same architectural development without losing their different functions.

Another building is the Ermita Vieja of La Puebla, an Islamic tower. Its origins date back to the end of the 14th century; in 1997 it was classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was completed at the end of the 18th century to serve the growing population. Its chronology therefore ranges from the Islamic tower through the medieval fortress to the late-18th-century church.

The restored Torre-Ermita de La Puebla has a square with a viewpoint; its interior has been prepared for visits, and its upper terrace is accessible. This provides travel planners with historic buildings from different periods and with different architectural functions as clearly distinguishable focal points alongside one another.

Trails and Landscape

The Senda del Tiempo is a circular route that can be started at the cemetery of Puebla de Mula. Within the municipality of Mula, it connects several areas of natural, cultural and scenic interest in the urban and nearby-urban environment. The starting point and the circular nature of the route are therefore just as much part of the Senda del Tiempo as the connection between these three areas of interest.
