Discover Beriáin: Church, History and Waterscapes

Beriáin is home to the parish church of San Martín, a place of worship of medieval origin that was extensively remodelled in the Late Gothic style in the 16th century, giving it its present-day appearance.

Culture and History

The main altarpiece of the parish church of San Martín was created by Martín de Echeverría in the first half of the 17th century. According to local tradition, the church was consecrated by three bishops on the eve of the consecration of Pamplona Cathedral. Another cultural facet can be seen on 1 November: after the main mass, children walk through the streets of the old town as part of the Txinurri tradition, asking to be given chestnuts.

The medieval necropolis of San Esteban was used mainly between the 11th and 13th centuries. A total of 330 graves were found there. Only a remnant consisting of three graves remains at the San Esteban archaeological site. The differing information on the period of use, number of finds and surviving remnant each gives the historical interpretation its own focus.

Memory and Public Space

The Parque de la Memoria de Beriain is open to the public. The park is dominated by the large sculpture Cielo de tierra by Ramón Llamas, which is dedicated to all victims of Francoist violence. The site thus combines a freely accessible public space with a work of art explicitly dedicated to remembrance.

Water Infrastructure

The history of water can also be seen in concrete structures in Beriáin. The Caseta de decantación and the first sections of the Noáin aqueduct are included in Beriáin’s municipal catalogue of historic, artistic or environmentally significant buildings and features worthy of protection. The water channel of the Noáin aqueduct ran underground through Beriáin; its route was marked by Arcas.

The Santo Cristo del Perdón church adds a 20th-century building to this historical picture. It was built around 1963 by Empresa «Potasas de Navarra, S.A.» to serve the spiritual needs of its staff. Thus, the time span of the religious and commemorative sites described here extends from the Middle Ages to the 1960s.

Nature and Leisure

A 1.5-kilometre path runs along the shore of La Balsa de la Morea and is suitable for walking. Bathing and swimming are possible there as leisure activities. La Balsa de la Morea is also listed in the inventory of wetlands of Navarre. The shore path and water activities offer different ways to plan a day in Beriáin.
