Villafranca: Baroque Architecture, Nature Trails and Festivals

Villafranca is home to archaeological evidence of a Roman agricultural villa dating from the 2nd century.

Culture

The parish church of Santa Eufemia is one of the most significant examples of Baroque parish architecture in Navarre. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, with a single-nave layout, a rectangular chancel and a clearly pronounced transept. The church’s sacristy houses a small museum containing Holy Week procession figures, Baroque sculptures, silverwork and historic liturgical books.

The Palacio de Bobadilla is considered an outstanding example of the Baroque style of the Ribera. It was built from solid exposed brick and dates from the late 17th or early 18th century.

The Convento de Nuestra Señora del Carmen was built in the first half of the 18th century, but follows the characteristic model of 17th-century monastic churches. Inside is an ensemble of Rococo altarpieces. In Villafranca, the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Portal represents a notable example of the local Marian and basilica tradition.

Nature

The route through the Sotos de Villafranca is approximately 12 km long. It follows the Aragón through natural riparian woodland, planted poplar groves and agricultural land, continuing to the confluence of the Arga and Aragón rivers.

Badina Escudera consists of four shallow, endorheic lagoons between the Aragón and the Bardenas. The area was classified as Nature Enclave EN-8 in March 1989 and is designated as a Special Conservation Area (ZEC). Reeds and rushes characterize the lagoons, while Salicornia grows on drier, more saline soils.

Routes and Festivals

The accessible Baroque route begins at the Ermita del Portal and leads to eight Baroque buildings. Its route includes QR panels and four tactile stations; it is designed so that everyone can experience the cultural heritage without barriers and is suitable for exploring on foot or by wheelchair. At the Plaza de los Fueros, the route includes the Palacio de Rodezno.

The San Pedro «Culequero» festival includes a popular procession pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Pedro. After Mass, the Culecas pastries typical of Villafranca are part of the celebrations.

The carnival features decorated floats, diverse groups and choreographed dances. The Jornadas Barrocas combine gastronomy, a market, carriage rides, music, children’s workshops, talks and guided tours on the Baroque heritage of the town.

The Villafranca–Milagro mountain-bike route is 6.15 km long, takes approximately 30 minutes and is rated very easy. The SL-NA 318 Desembocadura río Arga walking trail was officially approved in March 2022.

Getting There

Villafranca railway station is located within the town centre and offers passenger services with direct connections towards Alsasua and Castejón.
