Discover Baztan: Culture and Tradition in Elizondo
In Baztan, architectural history becomes tangible in specific details: the Iglesia de Santiago in Elizondo has a floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross. Its elevations are inspired by Gothic architecture and 16th-century architecture.
Culture and Local History
Puriosenea is one of the oldest buildings in Elizondo; the building dates from the late 15th or early 16th century. A courtyard lies in front of the façade of Palacio Arizkunenea. It is accessed through a round-arched portal with Baroque decoration and aligns with the side wings.
Crafts and Regional Cuisine
The Molino de Etxaide mill was built in the 19th century and restored in 2003. It is located 1 km from Elizondo's main square, is still in operation, and corn is traditionally ground in the watermill. Traditions and the Yearly Cycle
The Plaza de Largo is located next to Elizondo's market square. There, visitors can see Laxoa, also known as Guante, the oldest form of Basque pelota still preserved today. This variant is preserved only in Baztan and Malderreka.
Two livestock markets take place in Elizondo: one in spring and another in October. Among other things, local animals such as Pyrenean cattle and Pottokas are presented there.
Elizondo's patron saint festivals are celebrated in honour of its patron saint, Santiago Apóstol, on 25 July. For planning purposes, spring, October and 25 July can be understood as separate points in time.
Nature and Trails
From the Muniartea Bridge in Elizondo, you can see the Txokoto dam.
The SL-NA 11 Elizondoa route begins in Elizondo at Foru Plaza, also known as Plaza de los Fueros, by the Baztan Town Hall building and on the N-121 B road.
Elizondo can be explored on a short walk along Jaime Urrutia and Braulio Iriarte streets. A short walk and a named route are different formats; their starting points help to organise the day's itinerary mentally.

The Baztan Tourist Information Office is located at Plaza de los Fueros in Elizondo. It provides information about local festivals and the opening hours of the museums in the Baztan Valley.
