Trails and hikes

The signposted Etxaleku–Oskotz–Muskitz–Oskotz–Zarrantz–Eraso–Latasa–Goldaratz–Urritza–Udabe–Beramendi–Etxaleku trail network connects the villages of the Imotz and Basaburua valleys via paths and tracks and is suitable for hikers and mountain bikers. The long sequence of place names illustrates this connection as a continuous trail network.

The trail network can be walked in short stages of two to three hours between the villages. For day planning, this provides stages involving a change of location and a circular route as two distinct options; the stated duration makes the time required for the stages concrete. If you would like to consider hiking and mountain biking separately, you can compare the two explicitly named activity types with the length of the stages. The routes can thus be organized according to activity type and time frame.

The hike from Oskotz to Irumuga begins in the upper part of Oskotz and leads through an almost flat beech forest. It forms a circular route; on the way back, it follows the Cañada de las Provincias to Oskotz. This hike can be reached via the Latasa, Urritza or Goldaratz exits of the Pamplona–San Sebastián motorway.

The Cañada Real de Las Provincias reaches Oskotz and then continues along a signposted section to Etxaleku. It is also known as the Cañada de los Toros, has retained its route almost unchanged, and was demarcated and signposted by the Government of Navarre. The Cañada Real de Las Provincias ran through Imotz and Larraun towards Azpeitia.

Culture and local history

The Church of San Cristóbal in Oskotz is the oldest church in the valley and dates from the 14th century. The church in Oskotz is Gothic and has several structural elements from the 18th century.

The lower part of Oskotz was laid out along the Royal Road. Juantxenea is one of the named houses along its route in the lower part of Oskotz.

Rural insights

At Curly Creek Ranch in Oskotz, guided tours showcase the generation, storage and use of its own energy. Visitors can encounter goats, chickens, horses and rabbits there.

Oskotz is home to Cooperativa San Miguel de Aralar, considered one of the few dairy farming cooperatives in Navarre.
