Culture

The parish church of San Miguel preserves an anonymous Gothic altarpiece. The main Gothic altarpiece of San Miguel dates from around 1470 and was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 2001. In addition, the parish church of San Miguel preserves the remains of a brick-built Mudéjar tower with diamond-pattern decoration.

Tradition and Flavour

El Mayo is a tradition in Barillas in which the strongest poplar tree is brought to Plaza San Miguel and erected there. El Mayo takes place every year in May, on the weekend before the feast day of San Isidro on 15 May. After El Mayo has been erected, those present are invited to taste traditional products such as chistorra, cured meats, oil and wine.

Barillas celebrates the Fiestas de San Miguel in the first week of August. On the wine and food route through the Queiles Valley, wine and oil are considered two of the valley's most important products. For personal planning, the festival date and the range of regional products can be considered as different focal points. You can read the topics independently: a cultural event follows a different rhythm from a route, while regional products offer a separate approach alongside art and landscape.

Routes

The Vía Verde del Tarazonica begins at the former railway kilometre zero at Tudela railway station. It passes through the municipality of Barillas and lies approximately 1 km from the town centre. The Vía Verde del Tarazonica has been prepared for cyclists.

The SL-NA 219 Laguna de Lor route begins at the bus stop in Barillas and follows an almost level path through La Plana, between olive trees and vineyards. The 5.20 km circular route Ruta 49 Laguna de Lor begins in Barillas and leads to Laguna de Lor.

Starting point, activity type, route profile and route length provide different comparison criteria for planning your day. The information can be weighted separately when organising a day around a circular hike, a cycling route, the route through La Plana or the destination of Laguna de Lor. The different lengths and route profiles place different emphases on how to plan the day.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Barillas, you can compare travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions separately on the accommodation pages. For choosing a location, Gothic art, festival dates, the cycling route, routes to Laguna de Lor and the products of the Queiles Valley can be set alongside one another as different topics. You can compare the accommodation details with your own priorities.
