Discover Roncal: Culture, Trails and Regional Cuisine

The mausoleum of Julián Gayarre was created in Rome in 1895 by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure Gil and installed in Roncal in 1901. In 1996, it was recognised as an asset of special cultural interest (Bien de Interés Cultural).

Culture and History

The Casa Museo Julián Gayarre is located in the tenor’s former birthplace and displays objects relating to the tenor, as well as extensive documentation about his life. The Iglesia de San Esteban in Roncal was built largely in the 16th century in the Gothic-Renaissance style.

The Ermita de la Virgen del Castillo is a 16th-century building located in an elevated position at the edge of Roncal. It houses a Romanesque image of the Virgin from the second half of the 12th century, flanked by sculptures of Saint Barbara and Saint Orosia from the 18th century. Its location and name could point to an earlier fortification in the area. In 1738, an altarpiece was commissioned from Francisco Pejón for the Ermita de la Virgen del Castillo in Roncal.

Roncal celebrates its patron-saint festivities in mid-August for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The museum, church and hermitage offer different ways of exploring personal history, sacred art and local history.

Trails and Views

The streets of Roncal are mostly narrow and paved; some sections are relatively flat, while others are very steep. The route to Punta de las Viejas begins behind the church and leads to the grasslands of Santa Bárbara, with views of the Pyrenees.

The more challenging circular route to Pico de Argible leads up to Pico de Argible and returns via the path between Roncal and Vidángoz. The Miradores de Roncal circular route leads to notable places in the town and viewpoints, including Peña Guagüeso.

Nature and Regional Cuisine

The Roncal Nature Interpretation Centre extends over three floors and uses information panels, models, interactive games and a hologram. It shares its premises with the tourist office.

Traditional foods in the Roncal Valley include sheep’s cheese with a protected designation of origin, shepherd’s dishes made from breadcrumbs (migas de pastor) and wild mushrooms.
