Jalón de Cameros – Holiday apartment between nature and culture

Jalón de Cameros lies entirely within the Valle del Leza Biosphere Reserve.

Architecture and Art

The parish church of San Miguel dates largely from the 16th century. Its tower, sacristy and chancel were built in the following century. Its furnishings include a two-tiered high altarpiece, a Hispano-Flemish image of the Virgin and Child from the 15th century, a Mannerist depiction of Saint Sebastian from the 16th century and an image of the Immaculate Conception from the 17th century.

The Ermita del Santo Cristo del Humilladero was built at the end of the 17th century from dressed stone and masonry and covered with a dome. Inside, there is a small single-tiered altarpiece with Corinthian columns with fluted shafts and a rounded pediment; a coat of arms bearing the year 1699 can be seen on it. The ermita also houses a carved figure of Christ at the Column from the 17th century.

Nature and Trails

The landscapes you can experience on walks in Jalón de Cameros include the riverbank, the dehesa and the summit areas.

The hiking trail described begins in Jalón de Cameros and passes through the municipal districts of Muro de Cameros, Torre de Cameros and Jalón de Cameros. Its landscapes lead through oak trees, beech trees up to 30 metres high and rockroses. The trail is approximately 9.3 km long, has a medium difficulty level and can be completed in about 2 hours and 30 minutes.

A hiking trail along the river course offers mountain landscapes, natural viewpoints and rest areas. Its length, duration and difficulty level provide clear points of comparison for planning your day.

History and Customs

Jalón de Cameros lay on the historic Camino Real de Soria, which was used as a route by merchants, travellers and transhumant livestock herders.

At the festival of Saint Michael on the weekend near 29 September, products donated by residents of Jalón de Cameros and previously blessed by the parish priest are auctioned; the proceeds go towards maintaining the Ermita del Santo Cristo del Humilladero.

During the festivals of San Pedro and San Miguel, the saints are carried between the church and the Ermita del Cristo del Humilladero: San Miguel is taken from the church to the ermita, while Christ is carried from there to the church.

According to a local custom, at dawn on a Saturday, young men cut poplar branches and place them on the balconies of the young women they are courting.

Jalón de Cameros, together with Pinillos, Arrabal and Alcocera, formed the Señorío de Cameros.

Getting There

The main access to Jalón de Cameros is via the LR-250 road. The roads are narrow and winding, so careful driving is recommended.
