Briones amid vineyards, history and walking trails

Briones is situated on an 80-metre-high hill; its northern slope drops almost vertically to the Ebro. Extensive vineyards surround the town, while the historic centre features narrow, cobbled streets and numerous houses bearing coats of arms.

Culture and history

Since 1973, the historic centre of Briones has been protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category „Historic Ensemble“. La Casona de la Plaza is considered the oldest civilian building in La Rioja.

The Palacio del Marqués de San Nicolás is a civilian building of La Rioja's Baroque architecture dating from the 18th century and was completed in 1755. In this Baroque palace, La Casa Encantada revives former customs and displays household objects and domestic furnishings from the everyday life of earlier generations.

During the Jornadas Medievales, life in the 14th century is recreated in detail in Briones over two days each year. More than 40 themed stations are part of the event, showcasing historical crafts and customs.

Wine and landscape

The Museo Vivanco de la Cultura del Vino presents the relationship between people and wine over 8,000 years of history, while also conveying the history of wine, including its production and cultural significance. The museum covers an area of 9,000 square metres. The area and historical period provide two different points of comparison for planning the day, while the themes of history, production and culture present wine from several perspectives.

Routes and stages

The Sendero del Vino: Río Ebro passes through vineyards, riverbanks, walking trails and paths. The Sendero Davalillo is a 6.5-kilometre walking trail with a stated walking time of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and runs parallel to the Ebro.

Stage 13.1 Haro–Briones–San Vicente of the Sendero del Vino: Río Ebro is 14.3 kilometres long; the stated walking time is 3.5 hours. The Ruta del Vino desde Briones connects San Asensio, Briones and Rodezno.

The different route lengths, walking times and types of paths help you compare shorter and longer days of walking, as well as routes with different landscape connections. There are also different spatial references: some routes follow the Ebro, while others connect several towns.
