Grañón on the Way of Saint James: Culture, Landscapes and Holiday Apartments

Grañón is the last locality in the La Rioja region on the Camino de Santiago before the route continues towards Burgos. The section between Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Grañón is 6.8 km long.

Landscape and Trails

The landscape around Grañón is divided into a more mountainous southern sector with steeper gradients and a northern sector with gentler slopes. For planning your own stage, the route distance and terrain profile can be considered separately and assessed according to what each indicates.

Culture and History

The Iglesia parroquial San Juan Bautista was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It preserves a 12th-century baptismal font, regarded as the only surviving relic of the former San Juan monastery.

By a resolution dated 1 April 1982, proceedings were initiated to declare the Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista in Grañón a historic-artistic monument. A modern facet is added by El retablo de la luz: the work is an immersive multisensory video-mapping spectacle featuring photogrammetry, 3D modelling, animation, and particle and fluid effects.

The Semana Cultural in Grañón is organised by the Asociación Cultural de Amigos de la Ermita de Carrasquedo.
