Landscape and Nature

The Espinar, Serradero y Moncalvillo public forest in Castroviejo covers 1,528.82 hectares. The recreational area on the Río Yalde is located by the river on the outskirts of Castroviejo, next to the frontón court. This recreational area contains former cultivated land, scrubland and beech trees. The local wildlife includes squirrels, great tits and chaffinches.

Hiking

The Hayedo de Castroviejo hiking route begins in Castroviejo, follows a 15 km circular trail and has more than 500 metres of elevation gain. Along its course, the route crosses the Embalse de Yalde, passes through Piedrahincada and the Cocote de la Risca, climbs to the peaks of the Serradero and then descends to the recreational area at the source of the Río Yalde. A shorter version of the route is approximately 7 km long, has around 400 metres of elevation gain and begins the descent before the Cocote de la Risca. The differences in length and elevation gain can be compared directly before you finalise your daily itinerary. In designated restricted areas, special permission from the authorised users is required to collect mushrooms.

Culture and Architecture

The parish church Iglesia parroquial de San Ildefonso is a masonry building dating from the 16th century. Its structure comprises a single-nave church with three sections, an octagonal apse and a two-part tower from the 18th century. The main altar in the presbytery of the San Ildefonso church is a Romanist work from the 16th century with Baroque elements. The Ermita de las Santas Nunilo y Alodia is also one of Castroviejo's cultural features. The Ermita de las Santas Nunilo y Alodia, also known as the Ermita of the „Santitas“, is an 18th-century chapel made of masonry, with a single-nave floor plan and a wooden gabled roof.

Connections

After the concessions were renewed in 2009, the interurban route between Logroño and Nájera comprised four weekly return services between Nájera and Castroviejo.
