San Leonardo de Yagüe is one of the municipalities within the Cañón del Río Lobos Nature Park, a distinctive biogeographical landscape along a deep canyon with steep rock walls. Nature, trails, building history and local festival dates provide several clearly distinguishable themes for planning a trip. Depending on your interests, these themes can be considered individually and then combined.

The nature park forms the landscape setting, while buildings and festivals offer their own perspectives on the history and traditional customs of San Leonardo de Yagüe.

For a holiday apartment in San Leonardo de Yagüe, travel dates, the desired room category and cancellation conditions can be considered as separate details alongside the nature, culture and festival themes. This keeps accommodation details and the main areas of interest clearly distinct, while trails, buildings and dates each retain their own place in trip planning. Choosing one focus therefore does not have to displace the other themes.

Nature and Trails

The Senda del Río Arganza is an easy, 5.57-kilometre linear trail connecting San Leonardo de Yagüe with the Puente de los 7 ojos in the heart of the Cañón del Río Lobos Nature Park. The GR 86.2 stage from Navaleno to San Leonardo de Yagüe is 10.7 kilometres long and takes about three hours. You can place the two trail formats side by side as different planning parameters; length and duration provide two different measurements for planning your day.

Culture and Townscape

The Casas de los Ferrones are traditional houses built between the mid-18th and early 19th centuries by Basque ironworkers. The Church of Arganza is a possibly 11th-century Romanesque church with a portico and an arcade of nine round arches.

The Castillo de San Leonardo de Yagüe was commissioned and built in 1563 by Juan Manrique de Lara with the permission of Philip II. In San Leonardo de Yagüe, traditional conical chimneys are part of the vernacular street architecture. The medieval arch in San Leonardo de Yagüe was one of the three gates of the walled enclosure. The dates and architectural forms can be considered separately when planning.

Festivals and Customs

Las Candelas and San Blas are celebrated on 2 and 3 February with Paloteo dances inside the church. The festivals in honour of Santa María Magdalena end on 25 July with a communal serving of beef-based Caldereta at the Fuente del Tío Briones.

La Matanza takes place in mid-February and features a traditional slaughter ritual followed by a tasting of the specialities produced from it. Calendar dates, food and customs can be considered as different areas of focus when planning.
