La Alberca: Cultural Heritage, Nature and Traditions

La Alberca was the first rural settlement in Spain to be declared a National Historic Monument. The Plaza Mayor has a square layout, is surrounded by arcades with columns, and remains the social centre of the town. A regular bus service connects Salamanca with La Alberca.

Architecture and Tradition

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the most representative religious building in La Alberca, was built in the 18th century. It contains a remarkable 16th-century pulpit made of polychrome stone. Every day at nightfall, a special tradition passes through La Alberca with the Moza de Ánimas: a woman rings a bell, sings a psalmody and prays.

The festival calendar also preserves historical connections. Diagosto has been celebrated for more than five centuries on 15 August in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption. La Loa is a sacramental mystery play of medieval origin in which local residents take on the roles. The traditional clothing of La Alberca has medieval roots; its current form follows patterns from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Casa Museo “Satur Juanela” offers an insight into one of the few traditionally albercan houses preserved in a largely unchanged condition. The museum preserves the house’s original furniture and household objects and shows how people lived in the Sierra de Francia until just a few decades ago.

Las Batuecas Natural Area

La Alberca is located in an area that forms part of the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Nature Park. The Valle de las Batuecas in La Alberca is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of “Historic Site”. The valley, within the municipality of La Alberca, is characterised by steep slopes and lush vegetation. It contains a large group of prehistoric paintings with a naturalistic character, dating from the Middle to the Late Neolithic and extending into the Chalcolithic.

At the entrance to the Valle de las Batuecas stands the Convento del Desierto Carmelitano. It was built at the end of the 16th century as a place for secluded, eremitic life and was expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Nature Park and Trails

The Casa del Parque de Las Batuecas - Sierra de Francia is located in La Alberca and provides information for visitors to the nature park. Its exhibition includes dioramas, models, information panels and audiovisual materials, including content specially developed for children. The Casa del Parque also provides information about the park’s main plant species, including lichens, mosses and ferns, as well as the mammals and birds that live there.

The Camino de las Raíces begins in La Alberca and leads through a forest of oaks and chestnuts. Along this route, artistic installations are combined with the cultural roots and collective memory of La Alberca. The Las Batuecas treetop adventure park is located on the outskirts of La Alberca and has five courses with a total of 87 challenges or tree stations. These include zip lines, lianas, various bridges, ladders and nets between the treetops.
