From El Payo towards San Martín de Trevejo, the Ascensión Monte Jálama hiking traverse leads for 22.1 km, with 750 m of ascent and 888 m of descent, and is designated as a point-to-point hike. Hiking

Puente del Gaz is a waypoint on the Ascensión Monte Jálama route, which starts in El Payo. The route crosses the DSA-370 road at kilometre point 775; from there, a participant can be transported onward by vehicle in the event of problems. The approved PR-SA 28 route also passes through El Payo and is used as a hiking route. The Navasfrías–El Payo–Navasfrías hiking route is designated as a hiking route.

In the area of the Águeda Reservoir, sustainable fishing for brown trout and other species is permitted in controlled river sections. The sections limit the number of anglers and the catch quota; a free control pass is required for a day of fishing. The controlled fishing waters in the area of the Águeda Reservoir include the Irueña Dam, the Río Frío and Mayas; they are located between the municipalities of Martiago, Fuenteguinaldo and El Payo.

Nature

The hiking area around El Payo in the El Rebollar natural region includes extensive stands of Pyrenean oak, also known as rebollo oak. Habitat type 9230, “Galicio-Portuguese oak forests with Quercus robur and Quercus pyrenaica,” is also found in El Payo.
