Discover Sorihuela: Waterways, Granite Mountains and Traditions

The Ruta de los Caños in Sorihuela is a three-kilometre circular route that passes sixteen water channels, springs, washhouses and ponds; it takes around an hour and a half to complete. The Iglesia de Ntra. Señora de la Asunción was built at the beginning of the 17th century. Outside Sorihuela lies the Ermita del Cristo de Valvanera; it houses an 18th-century statue of Christ of Valvanera.

The Necrópolis del Maguillo comprises three double and two single graves carved into the rock. In the El Maguillo area, there is also a single grave carved into a granite block.

The Antruejo was a tradition observed before Carnival, in which people walked through the streets ringing as many bells and horns as possible. The Fiesta del Cristo de Valvanera, celebrated in September, includes a procession to the hermitage, a subsequent auction and the distribution of sweets.

Landscape

The landscape around Sorihuela consists of grazing land for livestock and small vegetable gardens located beside the river. In the higher mountains around Sorihuela, the terrain is rugged and difficult to traverse, granite rocks shape the landscape, and the vegetation remains sparse; from there, extensive panoramic views can be enjoyed.

The stone pine, “Pino Piñonero”, is also known locally as “El Pino”, is 17.60 metres tall and has a diameter of 3.61 metres. Its local name adds a clearly identified natural feature to the landscape.
