Berrocal de Salvatierra – Church, Springs and Paths

Culture

The Church of the Assumption of Mary dates from the 18th century. Its surroundings were renovated in 2021, creating El mirador del cura. A possible Roman milestone stands in the fence of the church atrium next to the entrance to the church. The town’s traditional houses were built of slate and typically had gabled roofs. Archaeological remains in the municipality indicate a Visigothic settlement, probably dating from the 6th or 7th century AD.

Landscape

Berrocal de Salvatierra is considered very hilly and lies on the slopes of several hills. In the northwest of the municipality, on the border with Pedrosillo de los Aires, El Carrascal rises as the municipality’s highest point; its elevation is approximately 993 metres above sea level. The Alhándiga River rises in the municipality where the Navalcuerno and Valdelosanchos streams converge. The bridge at the edge of the town in the direction of Pedrosillo de los Aires crosses the Alhándiga. At the foot of the bridge there are stone stepping stones that can be used to cross the river. Fuente Chica is one of the municipality’s best-known springs and was restored in 2019. Fuente de Abajo is one of the municipality’s best-known springs; it was repaired and restored in 2019.

Paths

The northwestern and southwestern outskirts of the municipality border the Calzada de la Plata, a road built by the Romans in the first centuries of our era. A livestock trail runs along the northern edge of the municipality and connects with the Calzada de la Plata. West of the village, a path connects the surrounding low hills with the Santuario de la Fuente Santa.

Festivals and Cycling Culture

The festival in honour of San Isidro Labrador is celebrated on 15 May with a mass and a procession to bless the fields. Around 2 July, Santa Isabel is commemorated with a mass and a procession around the Church of the Assumption of Mary. Traditionally, the so-called summer festivals have been held for many years on the first weekend of August. One of their defining activities is the Vuelta Ciclista de Berrocal de Salvatierra cycling tour.

Local Traditions

A local association organised the eighth Matanza típica together with the Ayuntamiento de Berrocal de Salvatierra; members of the association were appointed “Matanceros de honor”. The seventh edition of the Matanza Típica also took place in Berrocal de Salvatierra, bringing together several hundred people and forming part of the Matanza circuit of Salamanca Province.
