Culture and History

A particularly eventful period falls at the beginning of February. Las Candelas takes place on 2 February, on the eve of the San Blas Festival in Mozárbez, with a bonfire, tambourine music and the communal eating of chorizo or sardines. On 3 February, Mozárbez celebrates the traditional San Blas Festival. After Mass, San Blas is carried through the streets in a procession; the traditional gargantillas are then distributed.

The Iglesia Parroquial de Santo Tomé is part of the town's history and was built approximately in the 18th century. Its very simple forms characteristically combine stone, brick and plaster. The façade consists of rubble masonry and plaster and has a distinctive entrance arch with a small decorated bell gable. Located almost on the northern side of the so-called old town, the church is also situated almost at the geographical centre of the settlement and is largely surrounded by squares.

The Cerro de Utrera is a Christian medieval military castle complex. It is accessed via the Santuario de la Virgen de Utrera. On Modorro Hill, ruins from earlier periods can also be seen. The church architecture, castle complex and ruins thus establish different chronological and architectural accents without merging into a single historical setting.

Ecclesiastical and military evidence leads to different historical layers. Together with the Teso elevations and the trails, this creates distinct perspectives on contemporary history, the form of the settlement and the course of the routes, which can be factually distinguished from one another when planning a trip.

Landscape and Trails

The natural surroundings of Mozárbez consist of hills, or Teso elevations; among them, the Teso de Utrera stands out. Santo Tomé de Rozados is also significant for the history of the routes: the third stage of the Vía de la Plata passes through the hamlet within the municipality of Mozárbez. The municipal area is also crossed from north to south by the Vía peregrina.
