Discover Osorno: Canal de Castilla, culture and holiday apartment

At the section of the Canal de Castilla near Osorno are Lock Number 15 and the three-arched aqueduct over the Vallarna. Municipal Route 2 leads from Osorno via Laguna de Cabañas, Cabañas and Santillana. It offers a 13.7-kilometre variant with a walking time of 3 to 4 hours and a 15.8-kilometre variant with a walking time of 4 to 5 hours; both are easy.

Nature and trails

Laguna de Cabañas lies along Municipal Route 2, 2.7 kilometres from the starting point at Lock 15. It belongs to the Natura 2000 network and is particularly recommended for observing waterbirds in autumn and winter. Route 2 can be continued especially by bicycle via Santillana; the return to Osorno then leads via the N-611. The Fuente de los Caños recreation area has a wooden bridge for crossing the Los Caños stream, as well as 18 tables equipped with benches for eating or resting.

Culture

The ruins of the former Casa del Esclusero are located next to Lock 15 of the Canal de Castilla; both are considered historic and cultural assets. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the 15th century over an earlier Romanesque church building. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; the complex includes three naves and a bell tower. Inside there is a Romanesque baptismal font with mythological and biblical figures.

The Casa de los Hierro palace, built in the 15th century, is now Osorno Town Hall. The town hall is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Nuestra Señora de Ronte, the patron saint of Osorno, is celebrated on Whit Monday.

Pilgrimage routes and surroundings

The Camino Lebaniego Castellano passes through the municipal area of Osorno; part of its route follows the towpaths of the Canal de Castilla. The Camino de Santiago Vía Aquitania also passes through the municipal area and follows the restored course of a former Roman road between Deobrígula (Tardajos) and Lacobriga (Carrión de los Condes).

In the immediate surroundings of Osorno, approximately 3 kilometres away on the road to Abia de las Torres, lies the Dolmen de la Velilla. The megalithic collective tomb from the late 4th millennium BC is protected as an archaeological zone; its status as a Bien de Interés Cultural has existed since 1994.

In the wider regional area between Melgar de Fernamental and Osorno la Mayor lies the Vaccaean-Roman oppidum of Dessobriga. Its remains date from the Early Iron Age through the Roman period, that is, from the 8th century BC to the 3rd century AD.
