Villafeliz De La Sobarriba – Church Art, History and Hiking

Villafeliz de la Sobarriba draws attention to its parish church: the Churrigueresque altarpiece has five vertical picture panels and two superimposed levels.

Culture

The altarpiece comprises nine panels; the four upper ones depict the Evangelists, while the central one shows Christ in the Shroud. The church's furnishings also include a Baroque polychrome wooden carving of the Immaculate Conception with estofado decoration. An inscription associated with Christ in the Shroud states that the Bishop of León, Alfonso Frnz. y Pantoxa, granted 40 days of indulgence for praying a Credo before the image. The altarpiece also contains a Baroque depiction of Saint Roch with a dog.

History

Villafeliz is documented at least as early as 19 January 1097, when Bravolio Gutiérrez sold land in this area (“Villa Felici”). The place is among those mentioned in the Fueros de León, a historic document proclaimed by King Alfonso V in the 11th century. In 1192, Alfonso IX transferred half of the town to San Isidoro through a royal charter. A Fueros memorial dating from between 1313 and 1324 mentions Villafeliz in detail and establishes payments, offerings, taxes and rights between the districts.
