Valderrey between the Vía de la Plata and Puente Valimbre
The Roman bridge of Castrillo de las Piedras, also known as Puente de Valimbre, preserves old masonry with four arches, as well as material remains of the road and its surface. Puente de Valimbre spans the Turienzo River in the municipality of Valderrey. Historically, Puente Valimbre connected the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula with the north via the municipal area.
Culture and history
In Castrillo de las Piedras, the Finca del Monte nature and cultural area, dedicated to the poet Leopoldo Panero, is located within the municipality. Panero spent holidays there with his family. Valderrey's ecclesiastical history includes the parish of Nuestra Señora de la O. The church contains a depiction of the Virgen de las Candelas described as Romanesque-Gothic; for 2026, the church of Nuestra Señora de la O is designated as a heritage site.
The Sacramental Festival is scheduled for the second weekend in August. The old railway station of the Vía de la Plata is regarded as a place worth visiting in Valderrey. Puente Valimbre is also regarded there as a place worth visiting.
Paths and landscape
The historic route of the Vía de la Plata enters the municipality of Valderrey at Valderrey station and continues to a crossing of the Turienzo River. The Vía Verde a orillas del Tuerto is promoted as a natural riverside walking route along the Tuerto River near Barrientos.
Las cárcavas, or Torcas de Barrientos, form extensive, deep ravines of geological interest and landscape value. They are located 1 km northeast of Barrientos and can be reached via the bridge over the León–Astorga railway line at kilometer 163. The signposted Las cárcavas de Barrientos route runs partly through holm oak stands and partly closer along the ravines. An information board along the route provides information about the area's animal and plant species.
Valderrey also has practical Pontigas made of slate slabs, allowing the stream to be crossed. You can organize the topics mentioned by history, waterways, geology or nature observation, and compare different focal points with one another. A historical perspective emphasizes different aspects than a riverside walk or a route through the ravines. The different points of interest make it clear how varied a stay in Valderrey can be thematically: the historic connection at Puente Valimbre stands alongside the Tuerto river landscape, the route of the Vía de la Plata and the geological formations near Barrientos. This allows cultural visits, paths and landscape impressions to be weighted separately in your own planning.
