The present appearance of the Church of the Assumption in Viloria de Rioja is predominantly Gothic, following repeated alterations. The church’s baptistery preserves the Romanesque baptismal font in which Santo Domingo de la Calzada was baptised. At Calle La Asunción 2, opposite the parish church, the remains of the wall of his birthplace have been preserved. The birthplace has not survived as an intact building, but only as a pile of rubble.

Viloria de Rioja lies in gently sloping terrain that consists mainly of rolling hills with varying vegetation and agricultural land. In terms of its geographical location, the village is south of the N-120 national road between Logroño and Vigo, at approximately kilometre 59.
