Discover Vadocondes: History, Bridges and Paths along the Duero

Vadocondes was granted protection by the Government of Castile and León on 10 July 2008 as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Historic Ensemble.

Culture and History

Puerta Imperial, also known as Puerta Nueva, is a preserved section of Vadocondes’ former town wall. Puerta Nueva was rebuilt in 1796 and retains the coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs. Puerta de Burgos is a stone gate whose origins date back to the beginning of the 16th century.

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción has a recently restored main altarpiece from the mid-18th century, featuring depictions of the Assumption of Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint Anthony and Ferdinand III the Saint. Guided visits present the church, the parish museum and the restored organ. The historic organ dates from 1826 and was made by organ builder José Ruiz.

The Chapel of San Cosme y San Damián has an altarpiece from 1767 by the master Manuel de Oria from Aranda, depicting Saints Cosmas and Damian. The Chapel of the Humilladero was built in the early years of the 17th century by a couple from the locality and was later donated to the Brotherhood of Vera Cruz.

The Gothic Rollo Jurisdiccional of Vadocondes was renovated in the 18th century. It indicated a settlement’s administrative status and was erected exclusively in Villas. The Museo Santiago Domínguez was opened in Vadocondes and displays material heritage associated with the hotelier Santiago Domínguez, who originated from Vadocondes. A charter of privileges issued by Ferdinand IV in 1316 granted the Concejo de Vadocondes control over its own affairs.

Puente de Piedra has medieval origins and is still crossed by vehicles on the BU-930 road. It crosses the Duero on four arches: two larger central arches made of limestone and two smaller side arches made of sandstone.

Puente de Hierro is a railway bridge from the late 19th century with a Pratt truss. It was designed by Théophile Seyrig, a partner of Gustave Eiffel. Puente Seco is a stone bridge from the final centuries of the Middle Ages, near the former Roman archaeological site of Santa Ana and over the Rebolleda stream.

Nature and Paths

The long Ruta del Duero passes through Vadocondes and offers a riverside path where visitors can observe the local fauna and riverside vegetation. Near Vadocondes, the GR-14 Senda del Duero trail follows the Duero, alongside a recreation area with picnic tables and barbecue facilities. Sendero de los Valles is a short circular walking trail associated with Vadocondes.

Cuisine and Local Life

Lechazo al pincho is a traditional preparation in Vadocondes: the lamb is roasted over embers made from vine wood on a long iron skewer. On the last weekend of September, Vadocondes celebrates its patron saint’s festival in honour of Saints Cosmas and Damian.
