Santa Gadea del Cid: Fortress, Churches and Nature Park

Santa Gadea del Cid has been documented in records since the 11th century. Since 12 April 1973, the town has held the status of a National Historic-Artistic Ensemble.

Culture

The Convento del Espino is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural heritage site. The present-day fortress dates from the late 15th century; its central, square, 6-metre-high keep stands directly on worked rock.

Two historic gates remain as entrances to the walled historic centre of Santa Gadea del Cid. The town's medieval townscape includes half-timbered houses.

The Church of San Pedro was built in the 13th century in the Gothic style on the foundations of a Romanesque church. Its Plateresque high altar, dating from 1540, is the work of Juan Picardo and Cornielles de Amberes.

The church sacristy contains an exhibition of carvings, liturgical vestments and religious books from the church and monastery of Santa Gadea. The parish museum of the Church of San Pedro displays illuminated choir books and medieval documents.

The Monasterio Nuestra Señora del Espino was founded to commemorate Marian apparitions attributed to a shepherd from Santa Gadea in 1399; construction was completed in 1443. Its church has a single nave, a Latin-cross floor plan, rib vaults and keystones decorated with heraldic representations.
