San Juan de la Encinilla – Church, Lagoon and Cultural Route

San Juan de la Encinilla can be experienced through nature and culture in tangible ways. Culture

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was declared a historical-artistic monument in 1982. Its main chapel is pentagonal and covered by a ribbed vault with tiercerons and curved ribs. The church has three naves, separated from one another by large round arches resting on Doric columns.

The main altarpiece of the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista dates from the 16th century and was completed in 1553. It depicts scenes from the lives of John the Baptist, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus—from the Annunciation to Pentecost. The sculptors Isidro de Villoldo and Cornielis de Holanda were among those involved in its creation.

Nature

Laguna Redonda is located two kilometers from San Juan de la Encinilla, along the road to Sigeres in the Canalizas area. It permanently contains shallow, brackish water and has extensive floating or near-surface vegetation. The LIFE-IP Duero project reached an agreement with San Juan de la Encinilla to restore Laguna Redonda.
