Culture and History

The Pazo de Santa Cruz de Ribadulla is designated as a “Bien de Interés Cultural” (Asset of Cultural Interest). The complex includes a garden with more than 700 varieties of camellias. The site of the Pazo de Santa Cruz de Rivadulla in Ortigueira, in the parish of Santa Cruz de Rivadulla, was selected by Juan Ibáñez de Mondragón at the beginning of the 16th century. This marks the beginning of the documented history of the pazo at a specifically named location and within a clearly defined period.

The complex acquired its present Renaissance structure through later construction work in the 17th century. Andrés Ibáñez de Mondragón commissioned this work from the workshop of Domingo de Andrade in Santiago. The pazo thus combines a site selection from the early 16th century with an architectural form that emerged in the following century. The garden, too, adds a distinctive feature to this historical context with its large number of camellia varieties.

An unusual detail can be found at the Fuente da Coca in Santa Cruz de Ribadulla. The fountain dates from the 17th century and is designed in the Baroque style. Its dragon figure has a human body and holds two heads beneath its arms. This motif brings Baroque formal language and a striking figurative representation directly together.

Church and Route Connection

The church of San Mamede de Ribadulla dates back to the second half of the 12th century. Its Romanesque architectural features include a double central arch with blind arcades, as well as capitals decorated with leaves and intertwined animals. These details give the structure a clearly recognisable Romanesque design.

The furnishings also include Baroque high and Rosary altarpieces from the 18th century. The church is associated with the Camino de Invierno pilgrimage route. Romanesque architectural elements, Baroque altarpieces, and the stated connection to the route are therefore among the various historical and religious aspects of San Mamede de Ribadulla. When planning a trip that includes church visits, current opening hours should be checked in advance.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Several festivals in San Mamede de Ribadulla are spread across different months and dates. San Blas is celebrated on the Sunday after 3 February. The patronal festivities of San Mamede de Ribadulla take place on 7 and 8 August. The Aguardiente Festival is held in May in San Mamede de Ribadulla.

The dates do not form a single festival period: San Blas is tied to a movable Sunday following a fixed February reference point, while the patronal festivities fall on two fixed days in August. The Aguardiente Festival adds a May event to the annual calendar. Event dates should be checked again before travelling, as a date tied to a Sunday in particular requires a current date confirmation.
