Culture and History

Inside the church of Santo André do Hío, the Gothic form of the groin vaults is combined with the Baroque design of the coffered vaults. The church also preserves an original Romanesque façade from the 12th century. Along its eaves, Santo André do Hío features a collection of decorated corbels.

It is precisely the juxtaposition of these architectural elements that makes the church a place where different periods can be read in a single building. Inside, the Gothic groin vaults contrast with the Baroque coffered vaults, while the Romanesque façade and the corbels along the eaves reveal further historical details of the church. In this way, the view of the church interior is combined with an examination of the exterior architecture.

The O Facho sanctuary comprises more than 175 votive altars dedicated to Lar Berobreo. The Cruceiro de O Hío was created in 1872 by Ignacio Cerviño, who worked as a sculptor and stonemason. The Danza de San Roque is recognised as being of Galician tourist interest. Its origins date back to the 14th century.

Several forms of cultural heritage thus come together in O Hío: the furnishings of a church interior, the large number of votive altars at the sanctuary, a cruceiro created by Ignacio Cerviño and a traditional dance tradition. The historical references range from the Romanesque façade and the Danza de San Roque, which dates back to the 14th century, to the cruceiro created in 1872. The dedication of the votive altars to Lar Berobreo adds a distinct religious context to these historical references.

Nature and Coast

Praia de Melide is situated in a natural area protected by the Natura 2000 network. Monte Facho offers wide panoramic views across a large part of the Rías Baixas. From O Hío, you can also see the cliffs of the Costa da Vela, which extend along the coast as far as Cabo Home.

These named places do not describe the landscape as a uniform backdrop, but as an interplay of beach, viewpoint and coastal area.

Hiking and Directions

The Sendero Circular de la Costa de Soavela circular hiking trail passes the rugged cliffs at the Pozo Negro viewpoint. At sunset, the trail offers views of the Cíes Islands.

The route connects the Pozo Negro viewpoint with the rugged coastal area; at sunset, the view from there stretches towards the Cíes Islands. The name Sendero Circular de la Costa de Soavela explicitly identifies it as a circular hiking trail and places the route within the coastal surroundings of O Hío.

To get there, Santo André do Hío church can be reached from Cangas via the PO-315 road towards Aldán. After 4 km, turn left; after another 1 km, the church is on the right-hand side of the road.

The directions described therefore follow a clear sequence via Cangas, the PO-315 and the direction of Aldán: first the turn-off after 4 km, followed by another kilometre to the church on the right-hand side.
