Discover Agolada: Churches, Festivals and Paths to Pozo Negro
Os Pendellos includes food stalls, exhibitors’ stalls, as well as buildings for livestock and for market visitors to stay overnight.
The complex thus combines different areas of market activity: food and exhibitors’ stalls stand alongside the buildings intended for livestock and for market visitors’ overnight stays.
Culture and Architectural History
The Pazo de Borraxeiros is a private 16th-century building. It was built after an earlier fortress was destroyed during the Irmandiños Revolt. On its façade, the Pazo de Borraxeiros preserves a cylindrical tower and several coats of arms, which are among its surviving architectural features.
The façade makes the surviving details of the building visible: the cylindrical tower is one of them, as are the several coats of arms. Both features have been preserved at the Pazo de Borraxeiros.
The Pazo de Eidián was known as Casa Solar dos Basadre. Another historical connection is shown by the Ponte dos Cabalos: it lies between the parish of Gurgueiro and the parish of Parada. Gurgueiro belongs to the municipality of Agolada, while Parada belongs to the municipality of Lalín.
The Ponte dos Cabalos thus connects two parishes assigned to different municipalities. Gurgueiro is part of Agolada, and Parada is part of Lalín.
Churches and Early History
The Igrexa de Santo André de Órrea displays significant features of its Romanesque origins. The earliest evidence of its existence dates from the 8th century. Originally, it was a Benedictine nunnery, so Romanesque architectural features and an early monastic history come together at this site.
The dating of Santo André de Órrea extends back to the earliest evidence from the 8th century. Its original function as a Benedictine nunnery is just as much part of the site’s history as its Romanesque features.
The Igrexa de Ramil displays clear pre-Romanesque traces in its structure, including even Visigothic traces. The Igrexa de Berredo is a Romanesque building and shows influences from the Benedictine monastery of Órrea. Berredo belonged to this Benedictine monastery.
Festivals and Dates
The Festa dos Chóferes includes a traditional procession with vehicles and floats. It runs from the local church to the Carballeira da Zanca. The Festa dos Chóferes takes place on the last Saturday in July, linking the date to the procession.
Agolada’s traditional Feira do Doce takes place on the 12th of every month. In Os Pendellos de Agolada, the Corazón da Artesanía – X Encontro da Artesanía Tradicional e Popular de Galicia was also announced for 7, 8 and 9 July.
The date of the Festa dos Chóferes therefore falls in July and is tied to the last Saturday of that month. The three-day Corazón da Artesanía, by contrast, was announced for 7 and 8 July in Os Pendellos.
