The Mirador de Valdín near Alto da Vesada offers extensive panoramic views of the Pena Trevinca mountain region. This mountain area is home to the highest mountain in Galicia; the view also extends across the valley of the Xares River.
Nature
In the wider region around Valdín are the Moncalvo summit and the Trevinca and Pena Trevinca mountains. The Fonte Forraxes spring is also located near Valdín. The landscape description therefore extends from the individual spring to the named summits in the wider surrounding region. The viewpoint combines views of the mountain region with the valley of the Xares River, thereby adding its own distinctive element alongside the named mountains and spring.
Hiking
The PR-G 201 route continues to Valdín and then climbs towards Porto de Sanabria as far as As Tablillas on the edge of the municipality of A Veiga. Known as the Ruta Integral Serra Calva PR-G 201, it is 42 kilometres long, classified as difficult, and scheduled to take 14 hours for the round trip. The route description thus specifies both the direction via Valdín and Porto de Sanabria and the endpoint, As Tablillas, on the edge of the municipality of A Veiga.
Architectural Heritage
The Igrexa de Valdín preserves a Herrerian altarpiece, Mannerist paintings and a wooden coffered ceiling. Visiting the church involved asking local residents for a key. The interior furnishings and the visiting arrangements are two distinct specific aspects of this building: the altarpiece, paintings and ceiling shape the interior, while the requested key determined access for visitors.
The Capela en Valdín is a small chapel attached to a residential building. It has a rectangular floor plan, a four-sided hipped slate roof and masonry featuring rows of granite blocks at the building’s corners. The chapel is listed in the heritage catalogues of the Xunta and in the municipal planning catalogues. Its design combines the attachment to the residential building with clearly identifiable external features: the floor plan, roof and corner masonry each form part of the chapel as described.
A group of mills in Valdín used the flow of the Rego de Valdín. Stone channels directed the water to the mills so that the power of the current could be harnessed. The mills thus make a former connection between watercourse and building visible. The group of mills and the Rego de Valdín belong together because the stone channels formed the route by which the water reached the buildings.
Astronomy
The Observatorio Astronómico Trevinca has two domes, eight telescopes and a planetarium, and opened in 2021. The Centro Astronómico de Trevinca is located in Valdín, A Veiga, Ourense. Alongside the named mountains, buildings and route, an astronomical facility is therefore also among the explicitly described destinations in Valdín.
