Sobreira – Church, Pazos and the Camino de Santiago
Culture and history
The parish church of San Xoán de Sobreira preserves an Agnus Dei dating from the Middle Ages. Reconstruction of the present-day church of San Xoán de Sobreira began in 1741 and was carried out in stages. The current altarpiece in the church of San Xoán de Sobreira is an 18th-century work from the workshop of followers of the renowned sculptor Castro Canseco from Ourense. Thus, the same church building brings together a medieval religious motif, a construction phase begun later and 18th-century furnishings.
The Pazo do Rego is a building located in isolation from the rural village centre and standing on an extensive plot suitable for development. Its granite ashlar construction dates from 1762. Above the entrance portal, the Pazo do Rego has a Baroque pediment featuring heraldic stone carvings. These include the coats of arms of the Enríquez and Mosquera families, as well as those of other families that have not been identified. The pazo thus combines its freestanding location, granite ashlar construction and Baroque portal area with several heraldic representations.
Ponte Sobreira has medieval origins and was rebuilt in the 18th century. Its structure has a single, slightly pointed arch. Numerous mason's marks can also be found on Ponte Sobreira. The bridge stands over the Barbantiño River. Its historical origins, the shape of its arch and the marks in the stone therefore belong to the same bridge structure over the river.
