Discover Cadós: Igrexa de Santiago, Rubiás and Camiño de San Rosendo

In Cadós, the façade of Igrexa de Santiago depicts Santiago as a pilgrim. In another depiction, Santiago appears as a warrior in the Battle of Clavijo. In the interior altarpiece, Santiago is depicted as a martyr. The three locations of the images—the façade, the other depiction and the altarpiece—therefore belong to different areas of the same church and each identifies a separate depiction of the saint.

Culture

Capela de Pazos has an entrance portal with a round arch. A relief of a chalice is incorporated into the portal. The chapel’s belfry is simply designed and has an arch ending in a cross. Thus, two clearly identified architectural details stand side by side at the entrance and at the upper end of the chapel: the relief in the portal and the cross finial of the belfry. Peto de Ánimas en Cadós is classified as ethnographic cultural heritage.

History

The Castro settlement of Rubiás is located in the parish of Santiago de Cadós. Its site is on a typical spur above the Cadós River. The vulnerable western side of the settlement was protected by a wall and a ditch. The location on the spur and the protection of the western side are therefore among the inherited features of the settlement site.

The Museo Arqueolóxico Provincial de Ourense documents a granite warrior’s head from the 1st century AD from Rubiás, Santiago de Cadós. The find is therefore associated with both Rubiás and the parish of Santiago de Cadós and is documented at the museum in Ourense.

Routes

The Camiño de San Rosendo follows a secondary Roman road. Along its route, it crosses the Cadós River and climbs to Alto do Vieiro. Rubiás is a highlighted point on the Camiño de San Rosendo route. The path thus connects the named local and landscape features with a historic road route, a river crossing and the ascent to Alto do Vieiro.

In the municipality of Bande, the Monte Grande information area connects the park’s archaeological attractions. The area provides routes on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by off-road vehicle. The options listed therefore range from walking to cycling and horse riding, as well as travelling by off-road vehicle, while Monte Grande serves as the starting point for the named routes to the archaeological attractions.

Local

During the traditional Entroido in Cadós, ox or ram horns were carried as components of the costume. The horns are therefore among the traditional elements of this costume and occur in two specified forms: as ox horns or as ram horns.

In the municipality of Bande, the Mercado del Xurés takes place on the first Sunday of every month and offers an opportunity to discover local products. The fixed monthly date makes the market a regular recurring event in the municipality’s calendar.
