San Cibrao: Beaches, Festivals and Maritime History

On the second Saturday in August, the Maruxaina is celebrated in San Cibrao. This festival has been held since 1985. In 2002, it was recognised as a Galician festival of tourist interest.

Culture and History

Documents from the 14th century show that the shipyards of San Ciprián were famous at the time. Caravels were built in these shipyards. The Capilla de San Ciprián has a single-nave layout. It includes a small Baroque bell gable. The Ponte Medieval do Bao is a medieval bridge in the Roman style. At high tide, it allows people, animals and carts to pass through. Antigas Fábricas de Salgadura e Serradoiro de Don Julián is a restored former saltworks and sawmill. The ruins of an old saltworks at Playa de Cubelas are known as "Castillo Marino". The Monumento á armada - mina da II guerra mundial has been part of Playa de O Torno since 1967. The Museo Provincial do Mar depicts the life of seafarers. It also showcases the biological and ethnographic wealth of the Lugo coast.

Beaches and Nature

Playa de Cubelas has clear, calm waters. These waters are suitable for swimming and diving. Playa de A Caosa also has clear waters. It is home to a rich marine ecosystem. A recreational area is located around the San Ciprián lighthouse. From there, there are views of the Farallóns. The Farallóns are a group of around three islands. The Farallóns archipelago lies one mile off San Ciprián. The Río Xunco flows into the sea in an estuary beside Playa de O Torno in San Ciprián.

Trails and Maritime Sites

The Sendeiro Azul starts at the site of Antigas Fábricas de Salgadura e Serradoiro de Don Julián. It can also end there. The route to the Ponte Medieval do Bao runs within the Camiño Natural Ruta do Cantábrico. This route is also part of the Sendeiro Azul. Following a fire at the facilities in July 2023, visits to the Astilleros Fra were temporarily suspended.

Festivals and Food

At the Festa do Ourizo de Cervo, the town's bars and restaurants prepare sea urchin. The preparations include croquettes, empanada and omelette. It is also served plain, cooked and as a pudding. Visitors can taste it from the afternoon onwards. The Festa do Ourizo de Cervo takes place annually between the end of February and the beginning of March. In 2008, it was recognised as a Galician festival of tourist interest.
