Sober: Sil Canyon, Vineyards and Murals
Nature
Sober has ten public viewpoints. Nine of them are located along the Sil Canyon. The tenth viewpoint lies on the lower reaches of the Cabe, where it flows into the Sil.
The Sil Canyon is formed by slopes that drop as much as 500 metres. Among other things, the canyon is of great geological interest because of the Ollo de Sapo gneiss.
The Capela da Barca stands at the confluence of the Cabe and Sil rivers. It is surrounded by vineyard terraces.
The natural areas of the municipality of Sober belong to the Natura 2000 network. They are designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs).
The tower of the Santuario de Cadeiras offers panoramic views.
Culture and History
The Renaissance murals in the Iglesia Románica de San Vicente de Pinol were restored in 2020.
The Iglesia Románica de San Xillao de Lobios was renovated in 2020 to protect the ensemble of Renaissance murals inside.
Sober's archaeological heritage includes more than 40 Bronze Age rock carvings. Their millennia-old depictions offer an insight into prehistory.
The Santuario de Nosa Señora de Cadeiras is a pilgrimage site. Tradition attributes miracles to the sanctuary, which are attributed to the Virgin Mary.
Frescoes in the presbytery, on the side walls and in the sacristy of the Iglesia de Santa María de Proendos were discovered in the 1970s. They were restored in 2002.
The Rectoral de Gundivós is a restored 18th-century manor house. It serves as an interpretation centre for Gundivós pottery.
The Casa-Museo Genia Trigo is dedicated to the memory of Genia Trigo. Genia Trigo was the mother of the acclaimed painter and sculptor Modesto Trigo Trigo. During group sessions, visitors can watch Modesto Trigo Trigo paint live and talk to him.
Routes
A circular route starts at the Mirador de Boqueiriño. It passes through scrubland, cork oak, strawberry tree and oak stands, as well as vineyards.
A remarkably large eucalyptus tree, more than 100 years old, stands along the route.
A 1.2-kilometre section follows the Xabrega stream to its mouth at the Sil. Partially restored mills lie along the route. They formerly used the stream's water power.
Wine
The Amandi Wine Fair is one of the early-year festivals of the Ribeira Sacra. Every year, the winemakers of Amandi come together. They offer their wines for tasting.
