Meira: Serra de Meira, Source of the Miño and Sacred Architecture

Nature and Landscape

O Pedregal de Irimia is a natural hydrographic area on the western slope of the Serra de Meira and is considered the source of the Miño. The watercourse therefore begins at a specifically named point in the landscape. The Miño-Eo hiking route also passes through part of the Serra de Meira. The river source, mountain slope and trail relate to different aspects of the same natural area: O Pedregal de Irimia represents the river’s source, while the Miño-Eo route crosses the Serra de Meira as a hiking landscape. Romanesque and Renaissance Architecture

Santa María de Meira is a Romanesque building constructed in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. In 1931, the church was declared a National Monument. Its construction period therefore dates back to the Middle Ages, while its protected-monument status dates from the 20th century. The Capela de San Roque represents a different period: the building is a Renaissance monument dating from 1519. The two sacred buildings therefore do not belong to the same period, but instead reflect different historical layers. The Capela de San Roque is accessed through the parish cemetery of the same name. Routes and Starting Points

The O Pedregal-Corno da Órrea route begins at the Aula de la Naturaleza de Meira.
