Pilgrimage Routes

The Camino del Norte passes through Guitiriz and Friol towards Sobrado dos Monxes. In the municipality of Friol, it runs through the parish of San Paio de Seixón and then continues through Miraz.

In 2015, the Camino Primitivo was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Camino del Norte. The Dorsal Galega is located in Friol and is connected to the Camino del Norte and the Camino Primitivo.

Thus, several specific route connections are mentioned in relation to Friol: Guitiriz lies along the route of the Camino del Norte, as does Friol, while the direction towards Sobrado dos Monxes continues onwards. Within the municipality, San Paio de Seixón and Miraz are among the named sections. The Dorsal Galega supplements this connection as another reference point in Friol.

Culture

The Fortaleza de San Paio de Narla was converted into a historical and ethnographic museum in 1983. On the ground floor, the Museo Etnográfico e da Historia de San Paio de Narla houses agricultural implements, various riding items, and tools for weaving wool and linen.

From the top floor of the Museo Etnográfico e da Historia de San Paio de Narla, visitors can access the battlements and view the surroundings of the fortress.

The collection therefore brings together several areas of former everyday life: agriculture, riding equipment, and the processing of wool and linen are all represented on the ground floor. The battlements also provide access to a section of the fortress complex that can be reached from the top floor and offers views of the surroundings of the Fortaleza de San Paio de Narla.

The Igrexa Parroquial de San Paio de Seixón is a religious heritage church on the Camino del Norte and the Camino Primitivo. Its connection to both pilgrimage routes links this religious heritage site with the route sections that run through the municipality of Friol.

History

The Torre de Miraz dates from the 15th century and was designated an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 1994. The remains of the Fortaleza de Friol date from the 12th century.

The late Gothic building of Guimarei dates from the 15th to the 16th century.

The historical reference points thus range from the 12th-century remains of the Fortaleza de Friol, through the 15th-century Torre de Miraz, to the late Gothic building of Guimarei from the 15th century. In the case of the Torre de Miraz, its designation as a BIC in 1994 is also part of its historical classification.

Local Tradition

The Feira do Queixo e do Pan takes place annually in Friol during the second half of March. It serves to honour and preserve the local tradition of making cheese and bread in Friol.

The name Feira do Queixo e do Pan directly refers to the two foods whose production is to be honoured and preserved in Friol. Its annual organisation during the second half of March also establishes a fixed period in the local events calendar.

Geographical Location

The Área Recreativa de Miraz recreation area is located in the parish of Miraz (Santiago), in the village of As Laxes, 27229 Friol (Lugo), and is connected to the Camino del Norte and the Camino Primitivo.

The location details specify the position of the Área Recreativa de Miraz down to the parish of Miraz (Santiago), the village of As Laxes, and the address 27229 Friol (Lugo). Here too, the connection to both of the named pilgrimage routes is expressly established.
