Discover Cervo: Ceramics, Coast and Paths along the Río Xunco

From Cervo, the Camino Real follows the Río Xunco to Sargadelos, offering views of several waterfalls and watermills along the way. The Ruta del Río Xunco - Sargadelos begins at Praza do Souto in Cervo.

Other destinations: Faro, Pidre, Braña, Trabada, Campa, Surribas, Castelo and Ribadeo.

Culture

The Antigua Fábrica de Loza in Sargadelos was built in 1804 and pioneered mechanical decoration and printed earthenware. The Camino Real between the Royal Factories of Sargadelos and the port of San Ciprián was built in 1849 and was Spain's first toll road.

The Galería de Sargadelos presents the history of ceramics and the aesthetic development of porcelain production in seven rooms. It displays historic Sargadelos pieces and traditional Galician ceramics.

The Museo histórico de Sargadelos has a permanent collection and serves as an interpretation centre for the activities of the former factory, as well as for the history and cultural heritage associated with Sargadelos. The Iglesia de Santiago de Sargadelos is a church in a purely Neoclassical style. Santa María de Cervo is a Baroque church whose interior is defined by twelve arches.

Paths and water

The Río Xunco crosses the parish of Cervo before flowing into the Enseada de Rueta. Along its banks, you can reach the Ruta dos Muíños. The Paseo dos Namorados in Sargadelos ends at a waterfall.

In the municipality of Cervo, the Ruta del Río Xunco - Sargadelos passes the Molino del Mornelo, which, together with a bakery, a washhouse, a bridge and a yew tree, forms an ensemble. In the same municipality, the Molino del Pernán has four millstones and a large mill box.

In the municipality of Cervo, varnishes used to decorate the factory's products were made at the Molino de Vernices; a small hydroelectric power station was later built there. Caballiño de Pao offers riding routes in the area around Sargadelos.

Coast and nature

The Castro de Rueta in Cervo is a castro settlement located directly on the Cantabrian coast, with monumental defensive structures and a good state of preservation; it lies on a coastal headland at Rueta Beach and has two wide, parallel defensive ditches as well as a small intermediate rampart ditch.

The small Os Farallóns archipelago, also known as Farillós, consists of O Pé, A Sombriza and A Baixa and lies one mile off San Ciprián. In the municipality of Cervo, the botanical trail on Monte Escarabelada passes through a stand containing around 20 tree species from the original Galician forests.

Local traditions

The Queimada Popular de Cervo takes place in Plaza de O Souto in Cervo on the Saturday after 16 August and was recognised as a Galician festival of tourist interest in 2001. By prior arrangement, Mermeladas A Morena offers tours of its workshop with tastings of various types of jam.
