Discover Fonsagrada: Waterfalls, Culture and Botelo

At the Seimeira de Vilagocende there is an easy walking path that is also suitable for families with children. It is just over 1 kilometre long and has a moderate incline. The route is therefore short, while the moderate incline also constitutes a clearly identified terrain feature.

Nature and Paths

A visit to the Seimeira de Vilagocende includes a picnic area, a spring and a wooden bridge. The remains of an old mill are also part of this visit. The spring and wooden bridge are located alongside the remains of the old mill; the visit thus combines natural elements with an indication of the site's former use.

The first waterfall of the Seimeiras do Queixoiro is about 15 metres high. A staircase leads to a small sandy area and a pool. In hot weather, visitors can swim in this pool.

The second waterfall of the Seimeiras do Queixoiro is about 12 metres high. A well-developed access route with stairs leads to its lower section.

A Fonsagrada is part of the Eo-Oscos and Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve region.

Culture and History

The Museo da Fonsagrada is dedicated to preserving and communicating the cultural memory of the mountains of Lugo Province. Using objects, documents and oral tradition, the museum documents the way of life of the people of Fonsagrada. Their work and experiences over time are also recorded. Objects, documents and oral tradition thus provide different approaches to this local memory, while the temporal perspective includes changes in ways of life and work.

The Museo Comarcal da Fonsagrada was founded in 1984. It has ethnographic, archaeological and contemporary artworks.

The parish church Igrexa Parroquial de Santa María da Fonsagrada is located on Praza de España in A Fonsagrada. It lies on the Camino Primitivo, the Primitive Way of St. James.

Castro Chao Samartín is an archaeological ruin site in the surrounding area of Fonsagrada.

The Museo Etnográfico de Grandas de Salime is located in the wider regional surroundings of Fonsagrada. The Museo del Telar is also located in the wider regional surroundings.

Botelo and Festival Tradition

The Feira do Butelo da Fonsagrada takes place on the weekend before the Carnival weekend.

Botelo is a sausage typical of the A Fonsagrada area. It is made from pork ribs and other parts of the pig. To make it, it is seasoned and stuffed into the pig's stomach or a thick pig intestine. Botelo is then matured and smoked over oak wood. Its production therefore involves several successive steps: seasoning, stuffing, maturing and smoking with oak wood.

Visitors come on the weekend of the Feira do Butelo da Fonsagrada to taste or buy Botelo and other products of traditional home slaughtering.
