Mondoñedo – Cathedral, Cave and Galician Festival Culture

Construction of the Catedral de Mondoñedo began in 1219; it was consecrated in 1242. The cathedral is also known as Catedral Basílica da Asunción. At the Museo Diocesano y Catedralicio de Mondoñedo, you can see English alabaster works from the 15th century, Flemish panels from the 16th century, as well as significant works in silver and ivory.

Culture

Its original Romanesque portal has two archivolts and six columns. Its features also include a central rose window and two Baroque towers. Above them is a statue of Saint Rosendo, the patron saint of Mondoñedo. The building therefore combines Romanesque elements in the portal with the Baroque appearance of the towers. The Way of Saint James also passes through the town: Vila de Mondoñedo lies on the Way of Saint James.

The cathedral thus combines a clearly described portal, a rose window, two towers and the saint’s statue above them. In the museum, the works made from different materials stand alongside the alabaster works and panels classified by period.

Townscape and Remembrance

The Barrio dos Muíños preserves water channels, small bridges, washhouses and the Fonte dos Pelamios. The neighbourhood is also home to craftspeople such as stonemasons, screen printers and puppeteers.

The preserved elements of the Barrio dos Muíños therefore range from waterways and bridges to the washhouses and the aforementioned spring. The crafts represented in the neighbourhood include stonemasons, screen printers and puppeteers.

The Cemiterio Vello preserves the funerary monuments of several musicians and writers from Mondoñedo. These include Álvaro Cunqueiro, Leiras Pulpeiro, Pacheco and Pascual Veiga. The cemetery also preserves the social class structure of the 19th century.

As San Lucas is classified as a Galician festival of tourist interest. As San Lucas includes a horse fair and a Galician gait competition. The festival also features a dog competition and various dog demonstrations.

Nature

The Celtas River flows through the Cueva de O Rei Cintolo. Inside the cave, it feeds a lake. The cave therefore features both the underground course of the river and the body of water inside it as distinct elements.

For 2026, Mondoñedo offers guided tours of the Cova do Rei Cintolo. Reservations for these tours must be made in advance through the Mondoñedo Tourist Office.

The description of the cave combines the course of the Celtas River with a lake inside it. The guided tours apply to the year 2026; advance reservations are made through the Mondoñedo Tourist Office.

Culinary Traditions

The famous Mondoñedo cake is made with almonds and angel hair. It can be tasted and purchased at local pastry shops. Its ingredients and the opportunity to taste and buy it at pastry shops are part of the local culinary heritage.
