Sada on the Coast: Nature, Fontán and La Terraza

Sada combines a coastline of cliffs, small coves and sandy beaches with distinctive traces of port work, fishing and Modernism. The town lies in the Gulf of Ártabro and within the Mariñas Coruñesas y Terras del Mandeo Biosphere Reserve.

Nature and coastal landscape

As Brañas is a local natural area of special interest (ENIL) and is listed in Galicia’s Wetlands Inventory. Part of its outskirts can be explored on foot from Sada town centre. Cala Os Lobos is another coastal point: the almost untouched cove is surrounded by forests, while at high tide there is very little sand.

Waterfront paths and water activities

The Playa de las Delicias – Agra das Arcas route follows the promenade and runs alongside the sports and fishing harbour. Information panels cover historical and heritage-related aspects of the town. Another route is the Sada – Costa Dulce route, which leads to three viewpoints with resting areas.

Water sports in Sada include opportunities for diving and sailing. Current trail conditions can be checked before starting a route; for water sports activities, the applicable times and conditions should be clarified before travelling.

Fontán and Modernism

Fontán is Sada’s most prominent fishing district. The traditional neighbourhood features narrow fishermen’s houses with balcony windows, glazed galleries and turned wooden balustrades. La Terraza is one of the finest examples of Modernism in Galicia. The historic houses and the Modernist building give a walk through Fontán a variety of architectural accents.

Castelo de Fontán was a military installation built to protect the northern side of the bay. Together with the installation at Corbeiroa, it was built at the beginning of the 18th century. Castelo de Fontán offers views over Sada’s commercial harbour.

Beaches and access

Morazón can be reached by car, boat or on foot; the descent to the beach is via stairs. Playa de Cirro has access options for buses, cars, pedestrians and boats, as well as accessible access facilities.

Jibia and getting there

Since 2009, a gastronomic festival centred around jibia has been held at the end of April each year. During a gastronomic route through Sada, the squid is served in various tapas versions. When planning a visit to the festival, the current event date and times should be checked before travelling.

Sada is connected to the public metropolitan transport lines linking the provincial capital A Coruña with the surrounding municipalities. Travel is made easier by the town’s proximity to connections with the N-6, A-6, AP-9 and AG-13.
