Culture and History

The cultural heritage of Pantiñobre ranges from religious buildings and an archaeological heritage site to an ethnographic wayside cross. The Igrexa de Pantiñobre (Parroquial de Santo Estevo) is a cultural heritage site in the ART category with Integral protection status (Nivel I). The Ermida de San Xoán Bautista de Navas is likewise a cultural heritage site in the ART category with Integral protection status (Nivel I). The Capela de San Xosé e Santa Marta/Capela de San Bieito is a cultural heritage site in the ART category with Estructural protection status (Nivel II). Castro de Soutullo is an archaeological heritage site in Pantiñobre in category ARQ G.II-1 / G.II-3. The Pazo de Ardáns/Casa de Pedride belongs to the ART category and has Ambiental protection status (Nivel III). Thus, churches, chapels, a hillfort and a pazo stand side by side as distinct historical architectural and cultural forms.

The Cruceiro de Sixto complements the cultural heritage as an ethnographic heritage site in O Sisto, in the parish of Pantiñobre. It is located along the Camino del Norte, Camino Francés and Camino Primitivo pilgrimage routes. A living local tradition in the parish of Pantiñobre dates the origins of the Capela de San Xoán de Navas to 1804. It tells of a shepherdess who, after losing her flock of sheep, vowed to build a chapel in honour of San Xoán Bautista if she found the flock again. Thus, the religious buildings are associated not only with protection statuses, but also with a traditional origin story involving a specific vow and the name San Xoán Bautista.

Local Flavours

In A Riba, Pantiñobre, Queixería Barral produces Arzúa-Ulloa cheese by traditional artisan methods. The cheesemaker and its artisanal production complement the historical heritage with a specific food product from Pantiñobre.

Paths and Landscape
