Routes and pilgrimage tradition

In the heart of Dumbría, the Camino de Santiago to Fisterra and Muxía passes through the town; this section is known as the Vákner area. The route thus combines a specific trail with a regional story passed down through tradition.

Historically, the Camino de Santiago to Fisterra and Muxía passed through Dumbría; in the town of Hospital, the route included a pilgrims’ hospital. The historical route and today’s section of the trail therefore belong to different periods of the same pilgrimage tradition.

The Vákner legend is associated with the Camino de Santiago through Dumbría. According to the legend, the man-eating monster lived in Buxantes at the foot of the Pedra Ancha petroglyph. Buxantes and Pedra Ancha are thereby identified as specific locations within this tradition.

Routes and climbs

If you mark the route to the Fervenza do Ézaro as a section of your itinerary, it is given as 2.13 kilometres; this length applies exclusively to the outward journey. The figure therefore describes the one-way distance and not the entire round trip.

The easiest ascent to A Moa on Monte Pindo begins in Fieiro and leads via forest tracks and paved paths. Both the starting point and the two stated types of paths form part of the description of this ascent.

Culture and sacred sites

The bell tower of the Igrexa Parroquial de San Pedro de Buxantes was designed by the architect Domingo Antonio de Andrade. The architect’s name is thus directly associated with this part of the parish church.

The Ermida de Nosa Señora das Neves de Buxantes was built at the end of the 15th century. It was reconstructed in 1780. Its building history therefore encompasses both its construction at the end of the 15th century and the later reconstruction in 1780.

On its exterior wall, a door and an altar served as an open-air chapel for large religious gatherings and pilgrimages. Both elements, the door and the altar, are explicitly located on the exterior wall of the Ermida.

Mountains, water and the surrounding region

The Monte Padreda mountain is located in the immediate surroundings of Dumbría.

The O caduiro do Ézaro waterfall is located in the surrounding area, on the río Xallas. The waterfall is thus identified both by its name and by its connection to the río Xallas.

The Monte Aro mountain is also located in the surroundings of Dumbría.

In the wider region surrounding Dumbría lies Playa de Langosteira beach. This classification explicitly refers to the wider regional surroundings and not to the immediate vicinity of the town.

Part of the landscape of Dumbría belongs to the Carnota-Monte Pindo area designated as an LIC.

Carnota-Monte Pindo is integrated into the Natura 2000 network. The landscape is therefore described both through its LIC designation and through its inclusion in the Natura 2000 network.

Nature observation

The Aula de Natureza de Vilafernández is located next to the Fervenza reservoir. Its location is thus directly connected with the reservoir as a named landscape feature.

The Aula offers birdwatching of native and migratory birds. The range therefore includes both birds from the region and migratory birds.

Other places

Other places in this overview are Artes, A Aldea Vella, Leira, A Boeira, A Capela, Sada, Ares and Marselle.
