Culture and History

Part of the wall and two towers, one square and one round, remain of the Palacio de los Orellana. Documents from 1340 refer to the Palacio de los Orellana as “mi casa fuerte”. The Convento de San Benito is now used as a cultural centre. It was founded by Teresa de Meneses; in 1528, she and her daughters petitioned in Rome for permission to establish a convent in Orellana. At the end of the 16th century, the Bishop of Plasencia commissioned the construction of the Iglesia de la Inmaculada. It is designed as an Iglesia de Salón, with a large rectangular single-nave space and a semicircular apse.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

Noche de los Jaramagos is a Holy Week tradition. On the night from Holy Saturday to Easter Sunday, Calle Real between Plaza de España and the corner with Calle Convento is decorated with collected plants. After the decorations have been put up as part of Noche de los Jaramagos, traditional migas are eaten. For the Fiesta de San Sebastián, people gather in Plaza de San Sebastián after the religious celebrations to sample Sangría Orellanense and typical sweets from the village. Orellana la Vieja also celebrates the festival of San Isidro on 15 May; San Isidro is regarded as the patron saint of farmers.
