Calamonte is particularly interesting where architectural history can be seen in specific details. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is considered to have been built at the end of the 14th or beginning of the 15th century.

Culture and History

The Iglesia parroquial de Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción was expanded in the first half of the 16th century, based on an earlier church building. Its single-nave layout has the shape of a Latin cross. The spandrels of the Plateresque portal feature two heads with echoes of indigenous representations.

The Antiguo Ayuntamiento was extensively renovated in 1897. At that time, it served as the municipal administration, council chamber, court, girls’ school and prison. In the Iglesia San José, a stained-glass window depicting the Holy Family stands out.

In the vicinity of Calamonte, in the Sierra de la Moneda, there is an easily accessible cave with rock paintings.

Landscape and Nature

Calamonte lies on the Extremadura plain, whose otherwise flat terrain is interrupted by small elevations. The Arroyo del Chaparral runs parallel to Calamonte and is channelled along the section passing through the town.

The Certamen Nacional Calamonte Joven is a national youth competition promoting creative and artistic work. Categories include, among others, short novels, children’s stories, poetry, theatre texts, painting, photography, short films, comics, graphic design, dance and amateur theatre. The conditions of participation are reviewed and amended annually in line with the young people’s suggestions.

Cuisine

Calamonte’s traditional, handcrafted baked goods include flores, roscas and perrunillas, among others.
