Campanario: Holiday Apartments, Culture and Waterscapes

The archaeological complex of La Mata is located in the municipality of Campanario (Badajoz) and is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Archaeological Zone category. The building at La Mata served as a residence for rural elites during the post-Orientalizing period.

Culture and History

In the center of Campanario stands the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. Its front façade features a bell gable that replaced an earlier tower. On the square, the Casa del Diablo has a distinctive stone façade. The Convento de las Clarisas has a façade bearing the coat of arms of the Franciscan Order, depicting crossed arms.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Piedraescrita was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Government of Extremadura in 1993. It is located at a Mesta resting place about 10 kilometers from Campanario. The chapel has a surrounding portico and a Baroque, domed camarín. The venerated statue of the Virgin of Piedraescrita, Virgen de Piedraescrita, dates back to the 13th century. The Romería de Piedraescrita is recognized as a festival of tourist interest in Extremadura and is celebrated on Easter Monday in honor of the Virgen de Piedraescrita.

The Museo Arte-Naturaleza y Etnográfico de Campanario presents an educational permanent exhibition about rural society in the recent past. It also displays tools from local trades, as well as handicrafts made from esparto grass and juncia. Museum visits are arranged by telephone appointment.

Nature by the Water

The Embalse del Paredón is a microhabitat for waterfowl, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. The Presa del Paredón is listed in the inventory of Extremadura's historical and cultural heritage. It holds back the waters of the Arroyo del Molar, a tributary of the Zújar, and is built of quartzite and slate masonry.

The Orellana Reservoir is popular with birdwatchers and is home to, among others, griffon vultures, golden eagles, black storks, otters, badgers and Iberian spadefoot toads. It forms part of a wetland of international importance; its shores also border, among others, the municipality of Campanario.

Hiking and Water Sports

The GR-115 TranSerena is divided into four stages and includes a stage from Castuera to Campanario. The Campanario–La Haba stage follows the course of the Arroyo del Molar. Playa de Campanario is a freshwater beach on the left bank of the Orellana Reservoir. Water sports can be practiced at Playa de Campanario.

Getting There

To reach Campanario, take the A-5 to exit 316, then the EX-A2 to exit 23, and continue on the EX-104 toward Campanario.
