Culture

Montemolín is home to the Parroquia de la Purísima Concepción, a single-nave church in the Gothic-Renaissance style with a rectangular, elongated floor plan and walls made of exposed masonry and stone. It has 14 altars with their corresponding retables; most are Baroque, Solomonic or mirror retables from the 17th and 18th centuries. The site of the Parroquia de la Purísima Concepción was formerly occupied by an inn or hospital that provided accommodation for pilgrims travelling the Camino de Santiago from the south.

The Ermita de San Blas is considered the only surviving example in the territories associated with the Order of Santiago of a place of worship with two naves and a chancel set off the building’s main axis. The present-day Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Granada was Montemolín’s parish church in the late Middle Ages and was dedicated to Saint James. Reused stone blocks from a vanished building were incorporated into the Puente Medieval de Gallicanta.

History and Festivals

The Festividad de la Virgen de la Granada includes a solemn Mass and a procession in honour of Montemolín’s patron saint at the hermitage of the same name. The Romería de San Benito takes place at a restored hermitage dedicated to Saint Benedict, set in a beautiful plain a few kilometres from the centre of Montemolín.

Landscape

Montemolín is located approximately 7 km from the A-66, the Autovía de la Ruta de la Plata, and the N-630 national road. The Río Viar runs through the municipality of Montemolín and has cut deeply into the Paleozoic subsoil. Montemolín has a hilly landscape with dehesa and low scrub vegetation. Montemolín’s traditional cuisine includes Guarrito, gazpacho, caldereta, migas, and sweets such as gañotes and perrunillas. The Día del Guarrito festival includes preparing a caldereta in the morning, followed by the free distribution of chanfaina and Guarrito in caldereta by the Ayuntamiento.
