Esparragosa de Lares – Reservoir, Hiking Trails and Culture
Esparragosa de Lares offers panoramic views of the Zújar Reservoir. It lies between the municipal areas of Castuera and Esparragosa de Lares. Cerro Masatrigo has an almost perfectly conical shape and today appears to rise from the blue waters of the La Serena Reservoir. There are four viewpoints at Cerro Masatrigo; only one has particularly noteworthy facilities.
Hiking
The Sendero Fortaleza de Lares is an easy, 3.15 km circular hiking trail with a walking time of 1 hour and 40 minutes; it starts in Galizuela. The trail offers panoramic views of the La Serena Reservoir and the surrounding landscape and leads to the ruins of the Templar-origin Fortaleza de Lares. The Sendero Botánico Cerro de Masatrigo offers two hiking routes: one with almost no elevation gain at mid-slope and a more direct, steeper ascent to the summit with a higher level of difficulty. The different route profiles help hikers compare plans by length and difficulty.
The Ruta de los Embalses leads to Esparragosa de Lares, where it follows the path to the Ermita over the Sierra del Castillo and then continues to the other side before descending to Puebla de Alcocer. The GR 114 Camino Natural del Guadiana lists Playa de los Llanos in Esparragosa de Lares as one of the region’s interesting places.
Culture
The parish church of Iglesia de Santa Catalina de Alejandría dates from the period between the late 15th and early 16th centuries and was built in the Extremaduran Mudéjar style. Villa Romana La Sevillana was a rural Roman complex from the 4th century; its mosaic-paved areas were recovered and transferred for later exhibition. Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is known as “El Hospital”. The rustic chapel has buttresses, a round-arched portal between columns and a small bell gable. Outside Esparragosa de Lares, the Ermita de la Virgen de la Cueva stands on a hill; it is the town’s patronal shrine.
Water
Playa de Los Llanos has a children’s playground, a beach bar, a picnic area, outdoor showers and a jetty. It can be reached via an access road from Esparragosa de Lares and is open for swimming and water sports.
