Culture

The parish church of San Bartolomé Apóstol has a Latin-cross floor plan, a Late Gothic style and ribbed vaults.

Only two walls of the Palacio de Monroy remain today. The Palacio de Monroy was remodelled in the second half of the 16th century. The nearby Convento de la Madre de Dios, located near Valverde de Leganés, is 2.5 kilometres from the town and was founded in 1540.

The Real Pósito was probably built in the 16th century; according to the year in its inscription, its granite-clad façade dates from the 18th century and bears the year 1746.

Nature and Landscape

The Pantano de Piedra Aguda is located about 2 kilometres from Valverde de Leganés, in a landscape with Mediterranean vegetation and numerous batholiths. It was built in the 1960s; the dam wall is 30 metres high, its capacity is 16.3 hm³ and the flooded area covers 250 hectares.

Its shores are covered with eucalyptus trees, holm oaks and cork oaks. From the Piedra del Niño Dios rock at the Pantano de Piedra Aguda, there is a view across the entire Llanos de Olivenza region.

The Almendro Real (Prunus amygdaloides) was designated an “Árbol Singular” because of its biometric characteristics, beautiful growth and spectacular blossom.

Things to Do

The PR-BA 160 La Cocosa route can begin in Valverde de Leganés and is suitable for hiking and cycling. On the road from Valverde de Leganés towards Táliga, an agricultural track branches off to the right after approximately one kilometre and passes through an olive-growing area.

Vive la Trashumancia includes a transhumance route that begins with a traditional shepherd’s breakfast featuring Extremaduran migas. The Cañada Real Soriano Occidental ends in Valverde de Leganés.

Festivals

Las Diablas takes place every year on the weekend around 15 August, with fireworks and signal flares, followed by a final battle in which the angels defeat evil. During Las Diablas, theatre, film, concerts, exhibitions and night-time routes are offered in the area around the town.

Valverde de Leganés hosts a festival honouring the figure of the shepherd and the customs of transhumance, which has been recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest.
