Culture and Townscape

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol combines architectural features of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods, dating from the 15th to the 18th century. Its tower dates from the late 15th or early 16th century and features several sections of battlements, giving it a fortress-like appearance. Inside, the church preserves several Baroque side altars as well as a main chapel from the first half of the 18th century.

The Ermita de San Andrés is the only chapel of medieval origin in Aceuchal; it was built at the end of the 14th or beginning of the 15th century in the Mudéjar style. The chapel also houses a Baroque image of Saint Andrew, attributed to the circle of Muñoz or Morato. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad dates from the early 17th century and houses Aceuchal's patron image, the Virgen de la Soledad.

The Virgen de la Soledad takes part in two processions on Good Friday: on the night from Maundy Thursday to Good Friday, she silently accompanies the Señor de los Reyes, a 17th-century crucifix, to the parish church; in the afternoon, she takes part in the Santo Entierro procession.

Festivals and Culinary Events

Held every two years, FERAJO in Aceuchal offers the general public a varied market, cooking demonstrations and musical entertainment. The FERAJO program included culinary tastings as well as a wine tasting hosted by the Cooperativa Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. The local festival “La Bruja de los Ajos” includes a photo exhibition in which women from Aceuchal demonstrate how they make braided strings of garlic using traditional craft methods; finished products are also displayed.

Every year on February 3, blessed necklaces are distributed at the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad to protect against throat illnesses.

Nature along the Río Guadajira

In some sections, the area around the Río Guadajira near Aceuchal preserves native riverside vegetation including ash, willow and elm trees, as well as oleander, cattails and reeds; mallards, moorhens, occasional kingfishers and, at times, grey herons can be observed there.
